Duration: half day
Learn the tango from professional dancers at a renowned café
Highlights: Tango lesson, Café Tortoni
FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
The origins of the Tango are traced back to 1880 and its birthplace the slums, inhabited by Italian and Spanish immigrants, Africans and “gauchos”. From this racial mix appeared the “compadritos” (small-time hoods) who tried to reflect in their music, their letters and their dance, the typical “cuchilleros” (knife fighters) duel characteristic of their social ambient. Despite its humble origins, in the 20s tango left the brothels and the underworld districts to reach the high-class ballrooms, but to do so it had to travel to Paris to come back triumphant. Forget the mannered ballroom dancing image, tango is real roots music: sometimes sleazy, sometimes elegant, but always sensuous, rhythmic and passionate.
Founded in 1858, Café Tortoni is the oldest one in Argentina. During the last century, its walls and green marble tables have been the meeting point for many renowned people, including Alfonsina Storni, Benito Quinquela Martín, Carlos Gardel and Federico García Lorca, among others. Enjoy a Tango Lesson in one of the private rooms of this beautiful café, where a couple of professional tango dancers will introduce you to the basics of Tango.
