DETAILS

FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
Depart the pier for a drive along the Huon Highway to the centre of Huonville, Tasmania's picturesque apple-growing district.  Huon Pine, valuable softwood that was once used to produce furniture and craft items, was discovered in this district and is still grown in some areas today.  A brief stop will be made at the Apple Heritage Museum, a former packing shed where you will have an opportunity during your guided tour to sample an apple that has been freshly-peeled on a vintage 1909 apple-peeling machine.

Your next stop is at Geeveston, where you will have an opportunity to visit the Forest and Heritage Centre, with its display of forest history, antique woodworking machinery and a large range of local crafts. In the Forest Room, the smell of Tasmanian native timbers permeates and you can see how pioneer timber-getters lived and worked in the bush. There are displays on the different types of forests in Tasmania, the animals that live in them and their modern use from sustainable state forests to protected World Heritage Areas. Enjoy the mini theatre where you have a choice of viewing woodturning and other exciting footage on Tasmania.

Next you visit the Big Tree in the nearby Arve Valley, which has miraculously escaped threat from fire and logging over the years. You continue to Tahune Airwalk where you can experience walking among the treetops past rare species, some found only in Tasmania, such as King Billy and Celery Top pine, myrtle, beech, blackwood and sassafras. The walkway, a steel framework supported by concrete towers and stabilized by steel guy cables, rises up to 48 metres above the ground and extends for half a kilometre over the Tahune State Forest and Picton River. After a BBQ lunch at the Visitor Centre, you travel to the Home Hill Winery (or similar), where you will participate in a wine-tasting overlooking the orderly rows of vines.

Following your tour, you will re-board your coach for the transfer back to Hobart via Franklin, Huonville and the Southern Outlet.
