FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
Depart the pier by coach with your professional guide and learn about the historic port of Fremantle, visiting the Fremantle Prison, the Western Australian Maritime Museum and the Fremantle Arts Centre.
Your first visit will be the Fremantle Prison, one of Western Australia’s most fascinating and significant cultural attractions. On arrival you will be welcomed by the Prison guides who will give you a private tour of the prison. The first convicts arrived at this prison in 1850 as a labour force to help build the most intact convict establishment in Australia. You will visit the Main Cell Block where you can view life as it was for both convicts and prisoners and learn about the interesting ways the prisoners passed time in the yards. You will also see the whipping post, gallows and the solitary cells. This prison was in full operation as a maximum security jail until as recently as 1991.
You will then be escorted to the Western Australian Maritime Museum where you will see the significant historic objects and boats that highlight Western Australia’s sporting and adventure heritage. Take a walk and learn through the exhibitions, the stories of human endeavour and their maritime past. There are six themed galleries: The Indian Ocean, Tin Canoe to Australia, Fremantle and the Swan River, Hooked on Fishing, Cargoes and Naval Defence.
Finally you will visit the Fremantle Arts Centre where you will be treated to a morning tea and experience exhibitions of contemporary visual art and craft. Your historic tour will also take you past the Round House, along the Esplanade and Beach Road for views of Victoria Quay and the Pensioner Forces Cottages. Following your historic journey you will return back to the ship.
