DETAILS

FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
Meet your driver and guide as you disembark the ship today.  Depart the port area for a tour of discovery in Newcastle, originally named Coal River in 1797 due the large quantities of coal found in the area.

You will transfer to the Christ Church Cathedral to enjoy a guided tour and if you are feeling energetic you might wish to climb the tower.  The Cathedral dates back to 1812 when a small church built from slabs was erected.  At that time there wasn’t even a Chaplain appointed to minister the area.  In 1816 that church was pulled down and a more stable church designed. Today the Cathedral has a lot of visitors and is admired for its beauty and the treasures that it houses.  Learn about and view these treasures on your guided tour.

Continue onto Maritime Museum, which is housed in an old wharf shed built in 1910. The Centre represents over three decades of work by a community group with a passion for the sea. This extensive Centre highlights the activity of one of Australia’s great Ports.  You will have plenty of time to browse through the magnificent exhibition and Museum guides will be stationed throughout to answer your questions.

Finally you will visit The Lock Up. During your visit here you will have time to take a look at the 121 year history of the former Newcastle Police Station and see a collection of objects such as handcuffs, padlocks, ball and chain restraints, police memorabilia and old photographs. Throughout the building you will be able to read about the history of the building, walk the through the cells and see the inmates’ personal graffiti, lasting reminders of the lock-up’s violent past.

Following your visit you will transfer by coach back to your ship.
