FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
Depart the pier with your guide and drive across the city to the Mt. Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the friendly staff and a short trip through the grounds will bring you to the Rainforest area of the gardens. Leaving your coach behind, you will enjoy a guided walking tour of the Aboriginal plant trail, learning about how the various plants grown here have played a part in Aboriginal culture and traditions.
Following your visit you will re-join your coach and make your way back to the shores of the Brisbane River. Along the way, a stop will be made at the Mt. Coot-tha Look-Out. This ideal location for photos offers stunning views of the Great Dividing Range, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay with its small islands to the east, and the Glasshouse Mountains and D'Agilar Range to the west.
You will then travel to the heart of the city by the river bank to the Dandiiri Maiwar Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Cultures Centre. Located within the facilities of Queensland Museum, the centre has an extensive collection that includes artefacts, historical and contemporary photographs, documents and oral histories. A curator at the Dandiiri Maiwar centre will greet you and explain how their Cultures and Histories program has become a significant resource for Aboriginal communities and Torres Strait Islander communities, researchers, teachers and students, and people with an interest in Queensland’s histories, societies and cultures.
You will continue onto Riverlife Mirrabooka which is located on Kangaroo Point, overlooking the river. You will be warmly greeted by the local Brisbane Aboriginal Tribe who will happily share with you their culture and history. You will even be invited to participate in a traditional Aboriginal song and dance with descendants of the local Yuggera Tribe as they perform indigenous stories, using dance skills passed on for thousands of years. During your visit, you will witness traditional fire starting techniques and share in Indigenous educational talks that will offer an insight into Aboriginal life and the history of this ancient land. Your hosts will invite you to try your hand at playing some of their traditional Aboriginal instruments, such as the didgeridoo and clap sticks.
Your tour comes to an end as you re-board your coach and make the return trip to the pier, no doubt filled with a greater appreciation for this land of many contrasts and its original inhabitants.
