Highlights: Pudong New Area, Shanghai’s Old Town, Yu Yuan Garden, Jade Buddha Temple and Children’s Palace
FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
Depart the pier and travel by coach to the New Economic Zone in the Pudong New Area. Stop for photos near the Jin Mao Building and the oddly futuristic Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower. This peculiar tower has become a symbol of the city and fully captures the boldness and glitz that are today’s Shanghai.
Tour continues to Shanghai’s Old Town. The Old Town used to be a maze of tiny alleys, but in recent years the streets have been widened and are now crowded with tourists. At the center of the Old Town you can find the Chenghuang Temple and the Yu Garden, in which stands the Huxining Teahouse, said to be the model for the willow-pattern plates much loved by colonial era Europeans. From here, proceed to the 16th-century Yu Yuan Garden. This cultivated oasis captures the essence of the landscape art and architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has also served as the inspiration for the famous willow-pattern chinaware. High walls adorned with huge, stone dragons shelter teahouses, pavilions, rockeries and carp ponds. A Chinese lunch is being served at Lubolang restaurant.
Following lunch, head northwest to Jade Buddha Temple, founded in 1881. Its rare statues of Buddha, each carved from a single piece of white Burmese jade, are of special interest. Depending on the schedule of resident monks, you may be able to peek inside one of the temples to witness a prayer session. Lastly, you will be greeted by smiling faces at the Children’s Palace where you are welcomed as an honoured guest. This remarkable colonial mansion was once home to a wealthy English businessman. Seized after World War II, it was converted into one of China’s artistic schools for children. Accompanied by one of the students or instructors, visit a classroom and witness children learning the art of dance and both traditional and modern music.
